The HP Officejet Pro 8500 wireless all-in-one inkjet printer is a near-perfect solution for small businesses and home offices hunting for a device that can print, scan, fax, copy in record time, all with high-quality results. This printer sets the bar high in terms of all the features it manages to pack into a relatively small footprint: autoduplexing, 802.11b/g, a 3.45-inch touch screen, 50-sheet automatic document feeder, and a legal-size scanner are only some of the extras this machine has to offer. Some will balk at the $399 price tag, but spend half an hour with the Pro 8500 and we're sure you'll want one of your own.

Design and features

The Pro 8500 is the HP Officejet J6480's older, more accomplished brother. The larger capacity paper trays actually make it larger than the J6480, measuring a meaty 19.45 inches wide by 18.86 inches deep and 13.03 inches tall. Most of the bulk is because of the built-in features including the autoduplexer, 50-sheet automatic document feeder, and legal-size scanner bay, all of which contribute to the footprint, which isn't so unwieldy when you consider the average size of a heavy-duty color all-in-one laser.

Like the J6480 and other HP printers in the Officejet line, the Pro 8500 retains the matte white and gray panels with a glossy black cockpit in the center that blends easily into a variety of decors. The center console is neatly organized with a 3.45-inch color LCD touch-screen display right in the middle. Although competitive devices like the Brother MFC-990CW do have larger screens, bigger isn't always necessarily better; in this case, HP proves the rule with a highly functional, easy-to-use heads-up display. The home screen shows all of the most commonly used option menus including Copy, Fax, Scan, and Photo preferences, a quick setup menu, and a graphical gauge that shows you almost precisely how much ink you have left in the tanks.

The rest of the front panel has a full telephone keypad for typing in fax numbers, a collection of quick access fax and copy buttons, a "Digital Filing Networking Folder" button that lets you scan and manage your images over a network, and a general "E-mail" button for one-touch scan delivery. Finally, the bottom of the front panel also has an external card reader that supports PictBridge USB, xD, Memory Stick, SD, and Compact Flash.

HP gives you the option to pair the Pro 8500 to a host computer in three ways: over a network with the built-in Ethernet port, direct connection through a USB 2.0 cord, and through 802.11 b/g networking. We followed the onscreen instructions and successfully paired the printer with our desktop computer in less than 10 minutes. From there, we connected satellite computers to the printer by simply installing the driver onto the other desktops. The process of setting up a wireless network with your printer is typically a painful process, requiring special network configurations and system changes, but the Pro 8500 slowly guides you through the setup with onscreen instructions that we found easy to follow and troubleshoot.

The large 250-sheet input drawer is fixed into the machine, but the top comes off for when it comes time to refill your media. In addition, you can extend the tray outward to accommodate A4 and legal-size paper and it also has an arm to corral loose prints; we liked that the tray doesn't come out of the machine and is made of a sturdy plastic, but we found ourselves wishing for the dual photo and letter-size paper tray that we loved so dearly on the HP Photosmart C8180. We understand that few businesses will print more photos than straight text and presentations, but at this price point, a more versatile tray would have been nice.

If you expect to print an astronomical number of documents, HP also sells an optional 250-sheet input tray for $80 that fits directly underneath the printer. The top of the printer houses a 50-sheet automatic document feeder for scanning and/or copying, and a small autoduplexer installs in the rear for double-sided printing. Finally, since this printer is aimed at the business market, the duty cycle runs up to 15,000 pages per month, which should be more than enough to satiate any small- to medium-size business.

In addition to the drivers, the Pro 8500 also ships with HP's Photosmart Essential and Solution Center software. The former helps your import, organize, edit, and share your digital photos, and the latter helps you fax and scan documents as well as order additional supplies to use with your printer. The printer draws ink from four individual cartridges and two print heads that house an additional two colors. We used HP's XL print cartridges that offer the best deal and found that a full page of black-only ink will cost 1.6 cents per page and 1.9 cents per color; both costs are well under the 3 cents per page average by today's modern printing standards.

The scanner on the 8500 comes with onboard Optical Character Recognition software that allows the scanner to interpret graphics into editable text. The HP Solution Center software has a "convert to text" option as well as an embedded "save as editable text" feature that automatically converts as it scans. We tested this functionality using several documents, including handwritten notes as well as simple text doc printouts and we received mixed results. Large, clear text translated well and the software even matched the original fonts, but the algorithm couldn't recognize our smaller letters and any of the handwritten portions, no matter how uniform the characters were. Instead, the scanner changed our letters into a font that looked a lot like Wingdings. All in all, the OCR isn't perfect, but you can count on it to work for light editing on presentations and other large-format scans.

Performance

Once again, HP doesn't fail to impress us with its lightning-fast print speeds. In this case, the Pro 8500 registered competition-stomping results in three out of the four benchmark tests, most notably in text, where it printed 11.35 pages per minute--double the speed of the next fastest (and still impressive) Epson Artisan 800. The rest of the categories proved equally impressive with the exception of the photo speed test, which scored 1.39 pages per minute--by no means disappointing, just average. Regardless, busy offices that have little to no time to waste waiting for a document to print will undoubtedly appreciate the performance speeds of the Pro 8500.

We also couldn't be more pleased with the output quality of the photos and documents. It's true that most offices won't put as much importance on the quality of prints as the speed, but it's good to know that no matter what the settings say, the device will still give you pinpoint color accuracy. Our test photos exhibit evenly saturated colors and thorough shading that few other printers can achieve. Our litmus test for all printers is how the ink lays on plain 20-pound paper, and the Pro 8500 easily passed this test, showing an impressive range of dynamic detail. The skin tones in our portrait shots blended well with their backgrounds and showed a rich color palette, including dark purples and lighter shades of blue and green.

Service and support

Service and support HP includes a one-year warranty with the option to upgrade to the Total One Package, which offers an additional two years of HP accidental damage protection, and access to the pick up and return program. In addition, coverage is extended for qualifying peripherals during the same time period. The standard warranty includes 24-hour toll-free technical support. In addition, online classes, FAQs, driver downloads, and basic troubleshooting can be found at HP's Web site.

Printer Buying Guide

Best printers

Choosing the right printer can be a daunting task. There are several different types of printing technology to choose from, each suited for different needs. Printers come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny travel companions to workgroup workhorses; some are geared toward photographers, others are for multitaskers. And the many specifications for resolution and speed can be misleading. As a rule of thumb, inkjet printers are a must for long-lasting photos, while laser printers are best to produce speedy text documents.

Home user

The home user demands a lot from a printer. The device must tackle everything from a book report to a newsletter to the occasional snapshot--all without breaking the budget. This is why for most home users, the best choice is a versatile and affordable printer, such as a small-office/home-office color inkjet. These printers cost anywhere from $50 to $150 and are designed to do a little of everything, albeit slowly.

The alternative: Get a personal laser printer for fast, quality text and graphics (starting at around $200) and a second printer--either a color inkjet optimized for photos or a snapshot printer--for digital photography. Or, if you work out of your home, consider a multifunction printer.

Budding novelist

Planning on writing the Great American Novel? You'll need a printer that can crank out page after page of text in double time. A personal laser printer should fit the bill. It can deliver epic amounts of crisp, legible text faster than Grisham finishes a new thriller. Personal laser printers start at around $200 or so, but they cost less to operate than inkjets do, so you can save up money for the book tour. Inexpensive, personal lasers are also a good option for college students busy churning out term papers.

The alternative: A general-purpose inkjet can also get the job done, and it gives you the added flexibility to print in color when necessary. But spend a little extra--more than $100--for a decent model that will be a little faster and won't chew through expensive ink and paper quite as quickly.

Digital photographer

Any inkjet can print photos in color, but if you want results that approach professional photofinishing, you'll need a printer that is designed to reproduce the dynamic range of photographs. If you're in the market for an enthusiast printer, you need to look at the gamut and characteristics of the ink set, the supported papers, and the color-management tools. If you plan to purchase only one printer or are a serious hobbyist, a letter-size inkjet is your best bet, since it can also handle routine printing tasks. Many use thermal dye-transfer technology (also known as dye sublimation) in which heat changes the physical state of solid inks until they infuse specially coated paper, solidifying as they cool. Snapshot printers can print directly from compatible digital cameras.

If you're into digital photography but you also run a busy home office, consider a multifunction printer. Manufacturers of these all-in-ones have been working on improving photo output and scanning technology. Plus, most now boast memory card slots, LCDs to preview prints, and other convenient imaging-related features.

Entrepreneur

If you work from a home office frequently or run a small business, a multifunction printer (MFP) is an excellent choice. Also known as all-in-ones (AIOs), these multitalented devices combine an inkjet or a laser printer with a copier, a scanner, and a fax machine. They save both space and money. Though inkjet models start as low as $100, we recommend spending slightly more for a model that includes standalone faxing and has an auto document feeder (ADF) for easily faxing and copying multipage documents

The alternative: If you already have a standalone fax or scanner, a personal laser printer should meet your needs; many color laser printers now cost less than $500.

Corporate cog

If you need a workhorse that can keep up with your small business or team within a larger organization, a workgroup laser printer is an obvious choice. Designed to juggle multiple print jobs, these systems have faster processors, more memory, and print engines that are capable of churning out more than 20 pages per minute. But these $400-and-up printers are more than souped-up personal lasers; they offer workgroup features, such as network printing, high-capacity toner cartridges, and larger paper input and output trays.

The alternative: A business-class inkjet may be sufficient if your team has modest printing needs, and some models support network printing.

Jet-setter

If you really need to take the whole office in your notebook bag, there's a printer out there for you. Portable printers shrink inkjet printing down into a convenient travel size. They weigh anywhere from 2 to 5 pounds and typically come with a battery (either standard or as an option) or a car charger for printing on the go. Some manufacturers are even adding support for printing wirelessly from a cell phone.

The alternative: For most business travelers, the best alternative is no printer at all. If you have a wired or wireless network connection, you can usually find a printer in most offices. And if you really get in a jam, you can always use a hotel business center or an airport kiosk.

Epson Stylus NX515 All-in-One Printer

The Epson Stylus NX515 All-in-One printer or Epson Stylus NX515 (printer/copier/scanner) represents a sweet spot for vendors. The $150 price tag seems to be just the amount of money folks are willing to spend on a printer for intermittent use, either at work or in the home. However, just because the machine might not get used every day doesn't mean that it shouldn't function flawlessly and retain its value over time. After putting the Stylus NX515 through our usual benchmark and quality tests, we have no problem recommending it to shoppers for its quick printing speeds, pleasing output quality, and a host of valuable features not typically included for less than $200.

Design and features

The sleek design of the Epson Stylus NX515 certainly sets it apart from other all-in-ones. We like the carbon-weave pattern that runs across the entire hood of the control panel. The grainy texture makes it easy to lift up and protects the lid from unsightly fingerprints as well. Like most printers, the finish is black, which leaves the printer with a subtle elegance that should fit comfortably into any office aesthetic. The output tray and the rear-loading paper feed both fold flat into the device, which measures 17.7 inches wide, 21.3 inches deep, and 11.7 inches tall--about the average size for today's printers. The printer is also compact and easy to store, since the depth and height shrink down more than 5 inches with the trays retracted.

The buttons on the control panel are all laid out in an intuitive strip on the left side of the machine. Starting from that top, you can see the large 2.5-inch tilting LCD screen that only takes up approximately 80 percent of the display, leaving an elegant black border around the edges. Below that, there's a series of buttons including a power switch, four shortcut function buttons for copy, memory card access, photo, and scan, as well as a directional pad for menu navigation and four more buttons for setup, display/crop, stop, and start. We usually require a 10-minute learning curve to digest all of the buttons on a printer, but we were up and running on the NX515 very quickly--a testament to the intuitive layout on the control panel.

The top half of the print juts out over the bottom output tray, creating a handle that lifts up to reveal the small four-ink cartridge bay inside. Down below, Epson leaves a small indentation for access to the extendable output tray. One small complaint here is that all but the base output tray are made out of a flimsy plastic that bends and shutters to the touch, and we worry about the physical integrity after prolonged use. The same goes for the retracting input tray on the back of the device. We do, however, applaud Epson for separating the input and output trays instead of combining them both into a confusing multipurpose drawer at the bottom.

For people who want to print directly from a digital camera or memory card, Epson includes a media card reader and PictBridge compatible USB port in the bottom-left corner next to the output tray, with slots for xD, SD, and MemoryStick Pro, as well as a longer slot for CompactFlash cards. The corresponding button on the top of the control panel acts as a shortcut button for copying and printing directly from one of these external cards.

Epson offers three ways to link the printer up to a computer: direct using USB 2.0, wired Ethernet, and 802.11b/g cord-free Wi-Fi. All of the drivers you need to install the printer using a wired connection come on the driver disc, which also includes a network set-up utility that guides you through the process of establishing a Wi-Fi connection.

Like many other printers on the market, the Epson's setup first asks you to keep the USB 2.0 cord plugged into a computer while it creates an ad-hoc connection to your wireless router. After you establish a connection, you're free to remove the cable and continue printing wirelessly using a PC or a Mac. You can also set up network utilities and preferences through the menu on the control panel of the NX515 itself, but we found the driver setup requires fewer manual operations.

We were also impressed with the abundance of user controls within the driver itself. For example, you can choose between several preset quality modes including Draft, Text, Text and Image, Photo, and Best Photo. Unfortunately, you can't assign shortcuts for your own preset standards. However, there's plenty of room for scene correction (people, landscape, night scene, sepia, gray), paper type, easy fixes (red eye, autofix, quiet mode), as well as a pop-up status monitor that shows ink levels, print progress by page (not many companies include the pagination progress), and a handy event manager for copy and scan modes. Epson also makes it easy to check up on the ink cartridges inside, with information on specific production dates (to monitor expired ink), manufacturer, type, and cartridge code for quick refills.

We did find ourselves pecking around for a creative software suite similar to HP's Photosmart Essential software that helps you edit and print out photos in preset templates like greeting cards and calendars. In a clear-cut case of sticking to an "all-business" philosophy, the Epson Stylus NX515 has no such software. Instead, Epson reduces much of the filler that business users don't need and simply delivers a productive, efficient machine. We can't fault it for failing to offer that extra software, so if you're uncomfortable editing photos yourself, we recommend looking into an HP printer for help along the way.

The Epson Stylus NX515 uses four individual cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink cartridges under the hood that makes a more convincing cost-efficient argument than sub-$100 printers that require ink refills every month. In this case, Epson increases the value more by offering standard and high-capacity color cartridges, and even extra-high capacity black cartridges. Using the posted cartridge yields on the Epson Web site, we calculate a page of all black ink to cost 3.1 cents and a color page to cost 3.2 cents; printers typically keep costs at less than 3 cents per page, so both prices are slightly higher than average, but not unreasonable for a device at this price.

Performance

The cost per page becomes more forgivable when you factor in the performance ratings you see here. In our speed tests, the Stylus NX515 is about average when it comes to printing photos, but it sprints ahead of the competition with presentation output speed, color graphics speed, and especially text speed. To widen the margin further, the NX515 printed a staggering 13.81 pages per minute of plain text on 20-pound white paper. Meanwhile, the next fastest printers are the HP OfficeJet J6480 and the Canon Pixma MX330 that both registered only 5.54 pages per minute, which factors out to slightly more than eight pages per minute slower than the Epson. In fact, the Epson churned out more pages per minute (text, graphics, and presentations) than any other inkjet printer we've tested to date. Look no further than the Epson Stylus NX515 printer if you need hard copies of your documents in your hand yesterday.

The printer also doesn't disappoint in terms of print quality. With so many driver options to choose from, Epson makes it easy to cater to your prints in the most efficient way possible. We tried to cycle through most of the options, including using Epson's Vivid colorspace as opposed to Adobe's RGB, but we found that Epson's preset setting produced the most pleasing and accurate images. By far, the most accurate samples came from black and colored text and graphics containing thick, black lines. Considering the cost of the printer and the consumables, we're comfortable saying that our print samples are some of the most evenly saturated, fully formed shapes we've seen in awhile. We're satisfied with the weight of thin and thick lines, and the readability is clear even down to the smallest fonts on normal white document paper. We're also equally happy with the photo quality that continues to live up to the Epson name. All the printouts display smooth quality and are free of graininess or blotchy facial tones. Again, we highly recommend the Epson Stylus NX515 for its performance alone.

Service and support

Epson backs the Epson Stylus NX515 with a limited one-year warranty that includes toll-free customer support weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT. Further support is available online through a model-specific troubleshooting guide, FAQs, e-mail support, driver updates, and document downloads. We're disappointed to see that Epson only includes one year of service with this device, considering the Epson Artisan 800 includes a two-year warranty. We understand that Artisan series comes with increased features and more hardware upgrades, but we're adamant in our belief that Epson should strive for user confidence across all product lines.

HP Photosmart Premium TouchSmart Web

HP Photosmart Premium TouchSmart Web. Although HP and Lexmark both released touch-screen printers at the same time, we have to credit HP for being the first to bring one to the consumer space, with the Photosmart Premium TouchSmart Web. The printer connects directly to the Web through a wired or wireless connection without the need for a PC, and you can customize the LCD's home screen with shortcut apps designed for productivity, fun, and utility. Additionally, the printer itself continues HP's legacy of excellent-quality document and photo prints at snappy speeds. These all make for a superb multifunction printer, but the $399 price tag is just too much of a premium for a touch screen that actually takes away from the printer's usability. We might feel differently if HP had included additional hard buttons to complement the screen, but as it stands, you can get a better touch screen, similar performance scores, and a more forgiving price tag on the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless.

Design and Features

Recyclable storage bags are included with printer.

There's no doubt that HP went to great lengths to improve on the design of its newest Photosmart. The Premium TouchSmart Web looks drastically different from the older models, with a streamlined flair and rounded edges all the way around the printer. The smooth lines, matte-black and silver finish, and lattice design on the top cover all complement the bright 4.33-inch touch-screen control panel, and the main body is compact (18 inches wide by 19.3 inches long by 7.7 inches deep) to easily fit into any work space. The rear sticks out a bit, because of the removable autoduplexer, which lets you save money and help out the environment by printing on both sides of a single sheet of paper. The printer is also short compared with other multifunction devices since it lacks an autodocument feeder (ADF), meaning you have to manually load each individual document into the scanner by hand. We're not sure why HP decided to omit this standard all-in-one feature, especially since all the other multifunction printers in its Photosmart line have one built in.

The front of the printer is bare except for a silver cutout in the center console that houses the 4.33-inch touch screen. The lone power button sits by itself on the right side and to the left you'll find two small LEDs that indicate the status of your wireless and Bluetooth connections. There's also a small media card reader and Pictbridge USB port protected by a clear plastic sliding cover directly underneath the swivel display. The back of the printer features the autoduplexer, power port, Ethernet port, a USB port, and two phone jacks for the fax machine (the functionality of which also takes a hit at the hands of the disappearing ADF).

We've been begging HP to reinstate the dual paper input tray we first saw featured on last year's Photosmart C8180, and HP finally delivered on the Photosmart Premium TouchSmart Web. The input feeder has two separate trays: one for up to 20 sheets of 4-inch-by-6-inch photo paper and another underneath for 100 sheets of standard 8.5-inch-by-11-inch letter-size paper. A small plastic arm also extends out from the tray to corral outbound prints. The printer handles the paper well, and we didn't experience any jams, but we do take issue with the clear plastic photo tray cover that inevitably hits the bottom of the display every time you replenish the stack. On top of that, the flimsy piece that holds the cover open is too weak to support the weight, forcing you to use two hands just to refill paper. It's a minor annoyance, but a mechanical error on HP's part nonetheless.

The printer uses five standard HP model No. 564 ink cartridges for black, photo black, cyan, magenta, and yellow, each with its own dedicated slot under the hood. The standard cartridges cost $10, but we'll use the XL high-capacity option for our cost-per-page calculation to measure the best deal you can get from HP. The XL colored inks cost $18 apiece and, according to HP, they'll yield 750 color pages, while the XL black replacement cartridge costs $35 for 800 yields. By our calculations, a page of color will cost you 2.4 cents, and a page of black strangely costs double at 4.3 cents. Again, you can save more money on consumables with the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless, which will cost you 1.6 cents per page for black-only ink and 1.9 cents per color.

Service and Support

The Photosmart Premium TouchSmart Web printer is backed by HP's exclusive enhanced support services that offer a dedicated toll-free number, TouchSmart Web expert help, and a one-year warranty that guarantees repairs with "Next Day Business Turn Around," offering brand-new replacement units for the first 30 days after purchase. In addition, HP offers an added Accidental Damage Protection and a Pick-Up-and-Return program that sends an authorized courier to pick up your failed equipment and deliver it directly to an HP-designated repair facility. You can find more warranty information by visiting the HP Support Web site, which also features online classes, FAQs, driver downloads, troubleshooting tips, as well as a new shopping buddy that puts you in a chat room with an HP sales rep to answer your questions before you buy.

Canon’s 2009 PIXMA All-In-One, Photo and Business Printer

Canon’s 2009 PIXMA All-In-One, Photo and Business Printer range: smart printing technology, intelligently applied. LONDON, UK, 19th August 2009: Canon has announced a new range of PIXMA All-In-One and Photo printers that offer intelligent, high-quality printing for everyone - while also making them easier to use. The range - comprising of seven new All-In-Ones, a premium quality A4 Photo Printer and an A3 office printer - harness the latest Canon printing technologies for photo-lab quality results.

New to PIXMA in 2009 is Auto Photo Fix II, an improved version of the automatic image-correction function first introduced in Canon’s Easy-PhotoPrint EX software in 2008. Canon is also making webpage printing simpler and smarter with the introduction of Easy-WebPrint EX allowing users to clip webpage information and build their own relevant, printable documents. Canon’s 2009 PIXMA inkjet All-In-Ones are also easier to use with the introduction of larger colour LCD displays and improved Easy-Scroll Wheel with 4-way cursor controls on some models.

All 2009 PIXMA printers offer class-leading print speeds that are even faster than last year’s models, while Canon has also become one of the first printer manufacturers to adopt ISO/IEC 24734, 24735 print and copy speed measurements across its entire inkjet range – making it simpler to make direct model-to-model comparisons using industry standards.

These new features join existing Canon technologies like FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) printhead technology and ChromaLife100+, enabling users to produce high quality, long lasting prints with any kind of document.

All-In-One PIXMA Printers Canon’s seven-model strong PIXMA All-In-One line-up includes three new entry-level models aimed at first-time users and students – the PIXMA MP250, PIXMA MP270 and PIXMA MP490. Two mid-range models – the PIXMA MP550 and PIXMA MP560 – offer ease of use and quality thanks to single ink tanks, while two flagship All-In-Ones – the PIXMA MP640 and PIXMA MP990 - are suited to any user, from digital camera enthusiasts to professional photographers.

Like the rest of Canon’s 2009 PIXMA range, the entry-level PIXMA Canon MP250, PIXMA MP270 and PIXMA MP490 all feature Auto Photo Fix II - an improved version of the image correction function included in last year’s Easy-PhotoPrint EX software.

Auto Photo Fix II makes it easy to correct underexposed images by using multi-zone algorithms to assess each area of an image before intelligently applying just the right amount of correction, ensuring you get beautifully balanced prints.

Easy-WebPrint EX enables web-users to clip key parts of a webpage that they’d like to print. The software, which is available to download from Canon, allows users to collect, edit and combine web content from different web pages. This ensures that users only print the information that is useful to them and affords them the potential to save paper and ink.

Other key features of the PIXMA MP250, PIXMA MP270 and PIXMA MP490 All-In-Ones include a 2pl FINE Cartridge system, which makes them simple to replace when the ink runs low, while also offering superior quality printing at 4800dpi resolution. The PIXMA Canon MP250, PIXMA MP270 and PIXMA MP490 are also noticeably faster than their predecessors, using ISO/IEC speed measurement tests.

All three models also include an Auto Scan Mode, which scans and automatically recognises different kinds of documents and processes them accordingly – making it easy to scan and file photos and business cards, for example. Canon’s smart Dual Colour Gamut Processing Technology (DCGPT) helps preserve the colour fidelity of the original scan, even with second generation copies, whilst delivering laser-like quality reproduction of text in copied documents.

Adding even more intelligent functionality to Canon’s PIXMA 2009 line-up are PIXMA MP550 and PIXMA MP560. These mid-range All-In-One printers come with large 5cm (2”) colour TFT LCD displays and a 2400dpi CIS scanner for high quality copies of your documents, photos and other media. Both offer a PictBridge port for direct camera or digital video camcorder connection and USB flash drive printing and also printing from memory cards, while PIXMA MP560 adds a built in Auto Duplex unit for automatic double sided printing. PIXMA MP560 also comes equipped with 802.11g Wi-Fi connectivity for fuss-free printing over users’ home wireless networks.

Both PIXMA MP550 and PIXMA MP560 offer improved print quality with 1pl, FINE printing and five individual ink tanks (black, cyan, magenta, yellow and photo black), with a print resolution of 9600 dpi. The PIXMA MPX550 and PIXMA MP560 make intelligent use of LEDs to light up individual ink tanks that are running low on ink – making it simple for users to see at a glance if one needs changing. PIXMA MPX550 and PIXMA MP560 offer improved ease-of-use with the Easy-Scroll Wheel, which gives fingertip control and access to all functions using the 5cm (2”) TFT LCD display. Offering an integrated 4-way cursor control, the improved Easy-Scroll Wheel negates the need for a separate cross key switch.

Canon’s All-In-One PIXMA printers find their best expression though in the PIXMA MP640 and PIXMA MP990 - the flagship models in the 2009 inkjet range.

Aimed at photography enthusiasts, home workers and small businesses, the PIXMA MP640 and PIXMA MP990 offer built-in 802.11g Wi-Fi connectivity and Ethernet ports for easy integration into a home or office network, while also delivering essential features such as duplex printing, twin paper trays and the ability to print onto DVD / CDR’s.

Both printers offer superior print quality and speeds using 1pl FINE printheads, with individual tanks for black, cyan, magenta, yellow and photo black inks. The PIXMA MP990 also includes a sixth tank containing grey ink, which delivers professional-quality photo printing with both mono and colour images.

Other key highlights of PIXMA MP990 include white LED light source in the scanner, offering instant white light for faster, better quality 4800dpi scanner output. PIXMA MP990 includes an Easy-Scroll Wheel with integrated cursor controls and a large 9.5cm (3.8”) colour TFT LCD display. Mons also features an Easy-Scroll Wheel with cursor controls and a 7.5cm (3.0”) colour TFT LCD display.

PIXMA Printers Aimed at home photo enthusiasts or those who want to upgrade an existing standalone printer, the PIXMA iP4700 responds to all print demands. This premium quality printer offers 1pl, 9600dpi FINE printing with individual ink tanks. Key features include direct printing from compatible digital cameras or digital video camcorders using PictBridge, plus support for multimedia printing onto printable CDs and DVDs, using the integrated tray. The PIXMA iP4700 is finished in black gloss with gunmetal aluminium highlights, ensuring it can be stylishly integrated into home or home-office space.

Smart PIXMA Printing for Business New for 2009 is the PIXMA iX7000, an A3 PIXMA printer aimed at SOHO users or small workgroups who want a fast, dependable inkjet capable of producing commercial quality output on plain paper.

PIXMA iX7000 is equipped with intelligent PgR (Pigment Reaction) Technology that lays down a clear-ink coating on to the paper just before the pigment-based inks are applied. The resulting output is water-fast, smudge resistant and long-lasting with virtually no colour bleed or print-through, as well as reduced curling - a common occurrence when printing graphic-intensive documents on to plain paper.

The PIXMA iX7000 comes with five tanks containing LUCIA pigment inks, as well a Clear Ink tank, and includes a 2pl printhead offering 4800 dpi prints. The PIXMA iX7000 also includes an auto duplex unit for two-sided printing at paper sizes up to A3, three paper input trays, including a large capacity 250 sheet lower cassette and a built-in Ethernet port for easy integration in a home office or business network. Like all of Canon’s 2009 PIXMA printers, the PIXMA iX7000 comes with a comprehensive software suite, which includes Auto Photo Fix II (as part of Easy-PhotoPrint EX).

PIXMA iX7000 users are also uniquely offered a range of downloadable document templates that can be used in Microsoft Word allowing them to easily create professional-quality point-of-sale output, so helping to reduce business costs.

Zebra ZM400 Printer

Zebra ZM400 Printer. Printer Zebra ZM400 is Industrial Solutions. When it comes to your business, it's possible that you started off with the intent to start tiny and upgrade your gear as you go. If you work with a barcode system, surely it quickly became apparent a home printer just wasn't going to chop it and you needed commercial quality print capabilities. The printer Zebra ZM400 falls right in this class and is the perfect choice for average to midsized businesses. It can take a lot and is completely designed for the job.

Zebra barcode printers are created using state of the art technology, which means that they are advanced products that offer high performance. They also offer a wide variety of printing applications.

When choosing gear for your business, cost is always rather of a concern. However over the long run, a slightly higher price can be justified if the machine has the features and durability you need. Here is where the printer Zebra ZM400 actually shines. The printer has a tiny footprint and can easily sit of the side of a desk. It also has an LCD screen with graphic capacity and masses of viewing area. The printer itself is fast, printing about 10' per 2nd and also has the capability for you to choose different resolutions depending on your present needs. Eventually, all the internal parts are easy to view through a clear side panel. This gives you a brilliant idea of what is occurring and also simple access to the guts if you want to fix the machine or change a print head.

For a modern business, the Zebra ZM400 Printer provides many features that are lacking in other printers of this sort. Due to your already busy lifestyle, you'll be pleased to hear that setup is a cinch. The company thought ahead and made the entire process intuitive. You may expect to see easy to understand prompts on the LCD screen that will walk you through the method. It's also good to know that machine can be set to the programming language of your choice. In addition, it is extremely simple to catch up. There are ports for a USB connection, a serial port and even a parallel port. On top of that, you can also hook it up wirelessly if that better suits your requirements.

When buying an economic printer, it's totally necessary to anticipate expansion. Fortunately , the company has done that for you. Whether or not you are moving from a Zebra S4M or are ready to upgrade to the ZM600, there's always a uninterrupted integration between the machines. You may expect the printer ZM400 to work just like all the others in the same line, greatly decreasing the learning curve involved in getting new apparatus. When you are printing in an economic setting, you want things to work right and it's good to know that Zebra hasn't only thought of the chances, but provided the solutions.

The Ultimate Sony Mini Laptop - the Vaio P Series "lifestyle Pc"

At last, a Sony mini laptop is here, the Sony VAIO P Series. Although not in the form some originally expected, an adapted Via Openbook, the Sony VAIO P series has all the size and weight credentials that a netbooks should have. It weighs a minuscule 638g, that's around two thirds the weight of the original netbook; the Asus Eee PC 701. Like the heavenly thin MacBook Air, the P-series is also under 2cm thick at 19.8mm and only "slightly larger than an office envelope."

But the impressive specs don't stop there.

The LED backlit screen, 8 inches across and in a widescreen format, has a surprisingly high 1600x768 resolution (compared to 1024x600 for your everyday netbook). At that resolution, it's unlikely you'll ever need much side-scrolling again, since most webpages aren't that wide. Battery life is stated as 4 hours for the standard model, or 8 for the large capacity battery - enough for a full days work.

My jaw hit the deck when I saw how much SSD drive storage the P series is offering - up to 128GB. SSD or Solid State Storage requires no moving parts and is thus very durable. But it's very expensive to produce a large storage SSD facility which has meant most netbooks have had around 16GB tops. A hard drive version is also available offering 60GBs storage.

Sony has incorporated some really clever extra features. Firstly, a GPS which needs no internet connection (in the USA and Canada only - more of that later), Windows Vista - a first for a computer this small and an array of connectivity options; Wireless LAN 3G Broadband, 802.11n LAN and Bluetooth so you're connected wherever there's mobile phone signal. Other more standard features like the 'Motion Eye' webcam and microphone are also included, not to forget the Sony 'xross media bar', common with the PlayStation 3 and Bravia HDTV range.

The inclusion of Vista is interesting. Most netbooks haven't strayed above 1GB of RAM whereas the new Sony has 2GB. Processing power is a bit on the light side however since the P series will only come with a 1.33GHz processor from Intel, not the Intel Atom common with most netbooks - perhaps suggesting how much Sony wants to disassociate itself with the "cheap and cheerful" netbook look. As we previously mentioned in our article on the VAIO TT - try searching netbook on Sony's VAIO site - nothing.

Of course, it's only just been made available in the USA (today 8th January) - starting at $899 which works out about £600 at todays (painful) exchange rate. And here's the good bit.

It hits the shelves in the UK as well as in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Russia in February. We can't wait to get our hands on one.

Sony Vaio Vgnar49g

Sneak Peek

Refresh your lifestyle and work style with Sony VAIO VGN-AR49G laptop.

Design

Sony VAIO VGN-AR49G laptop is an ultimate sleek laptop with appealing looks. It is very portable to carry around as it weighs just 3.9 kg. The height of Sony VAIO VGN-AR49G laptop is 33.5 mm and the width is 416 mm. The depth measures upto 299.5 mm. The handy AV buttons are bliss!

Key Information

Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium adorns Sony VAIO VGN-AR49G laptop, making it one of the most sought after laptops today. In hardware, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor works at the speed of 2200 MHz, to retrieve your frequently used data quickly for you. The RAM memory is 2048! Can you believe that? Most new notebooks these days are dominated by the Intel Pentium M processor. This CPU allows notebooks to be designed thin and light due to its low power and high performance.

If you're a wireless network fan, you'll also realize that most notebooks have wireless network support by default. Many laptops also have a much wider screen to allow enjoyment of multimedia and games.

Here's a personal scoop of the top 5 thin and light notebooks out in the market right now.

Toshiba Satellite M45-S3511

Powered by an Intel Pentium M 740 (1.73 GHz) processor and 512 MB of RAM, the Toshiba Satellite M45-S3511 is well suited for both home and office use. It also comes with a widescreen display, a speedy 8x DVD+/-RW burner and a huge 100 GB hard drive. A very nice notebook that is highly recommended.

Gateway M460XL

The Gateway M460XL is powered by an Intel Pentium M 750 (1.8 GHz) processor and 512 MB of RAM. The battery is very long-lasting and there's also a modular bay for adding an extra hard drive, a floppy drive, a CD-RW or DVD drive. You also get a 8x DVD+/-RW burner and a 80 GB hard drive.

Sony VAIO T240P/L

The Sony VAIO T240P/L notebook comes with an Intel Pentium M 1.2 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM and an Intel 855GME graphics core. Its long battery life will help keep you working for hours. There's a big 60 GB hard drive, but only a CD-ROM / DVD-ROM combo drive and a small 10.6 inch screen. Despite these shortcomings, however, you get a top quality brand name notebook that looks slim and sexy to boot.

Asus V6V

The Asus V6V laptop features a fast Intel Pentium M 1.86 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM and an ATI Mobility Radeon X600 graphics processor. This makes it great for high performance graphics and games, especially with the included 4x DVD+/-R burner and a 60 GB hard drive.

HP Compaq nc4010

The HP Compaq nc4010 notebook comes with an Intel Pentium M 725 (1.6 GHz) processor, 512 MB of RAM and an ATI RADEON IGP 350M graphics processor. The downsides of this laptop are the small 12.1 inch viewable screen size, the lack of an optical drive a small 40 GB hard disk. However, its price is hard to beat and one of the lowest in this list.

Conclusion

Whew! That's a whole lot of notebooks for you to look at. Try to keep the above thin and light notebooks in mind when you're out shopping for one. Compare other models you find against these to help you make a better purchase decision. Good luck

Compaq Presario A901tu

Compaq can be happily called the common man’s laptop provider due to their excellent range of entry level notebooks . Think of the hype surrounding the Ali V Frazier fight. Alien V Predator movie. England V Germany football match, and finally the 17-inch MacBook Pro Versus the 17-inch Sony VAIO VGN-AR790U/B.

Let me tell you straight off the bat this article is designed to provoke debate. I’m going to try and explore the benefits of choosing a Mac over a PC, or a PC over a Mac. No doubt this will swell the battle lines of both camps and hopefully fuel spin off articles and discussions in many of the IT related forums.

I’m going to post my colours to the mast and admit I’m a PC user. However a great number of my friends and business associates are die hard Mac users, including my mate Rob.

I’ve often heard Mac computers being referred to as having the Marmite syndrome, i.e. you either love them or you hate them. I am however conscious that approximately 95% of the graphic and web designers that I commission work with utilise Mac products. I take great pleasure when working with Rob at the PC One Stop Shop design office for long sessions to hear him singing the praises of a Mac over a PC. He seems duty bound to inform me that Macs are incredibly reliable and rarely crash. After working with him on both sides of the Atlantic for over twelve years I admit to being bored witless about Mac’s reliability. But I do smile the other side of my face when his Mac notebook crashes and he has to eat his words.

Maybe it’s a male Macho thing but he has as little enthusiasm for embracing a PC laptop as I do for trying a MacBook Pro. Although I am quiet envious of the latest Mac Book Pro features including the new 8 hour battery. And the fact that its carved from a single block of aluminium, the new MacBook Pro is slim , light and durable enough to take anywhere. MacBook Pro features two NVIDIA graphics processors — one discrete and one integrated — to help you get the most out of your applications. The entire trackpad is also the button, so it’s clickable everywhere. And it offers even more Multi-Touch gestures and functionality.

The Sony VAIO VGN-AR790U/B 17-inch Digital Studio Laptop has an Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 400 GB Hard Drive and Vista Ultimate. I’m a big fan of Sony Vaio after buying my first Vaio laptop in the USA some years ago. It never let me down and proved to be ultra reliable.

Given there’s not a lot of difference in the price, whatever your preference both are heavyweight contenders looking to win the title.

After a bout which surprisingly was devoid of cuts and black eyes, Rob and I agree to disagree. I guess it all boils down to whether you like Marmite or not. A survey of the 14 people in the www.pconestopshop.com office provided a resounding 12 employees in favour of the Sony VAIO VGN-AR790U/B 17-inch Digital Studio Laptop and just 1 in favour of the 17-inch MacBook Pro.

Check The Latest Printers And Scanners

Printers and Scanners the two, of latest technology are the biggest asset one can have in office or home. Here are some of the most common questions consumers have with regards to Dell ink and toner cartridges.

Compatibility with Lexmark cartridges

Dell printers are currently manufactured by Lexmark, a printer manufacturing company that has developed its own line of inkjet and laser printers. Because Dell ink and toner cartridges are often hard to find, Dell printer owners have been trying to use Lexmark ink and toner cartridges. While this is the case, only Dell ink and toner cartridges can be used for Dell inkjet and laser printers.

Where can one purchase Dell inkjet and toner cartridges?

You can purchase Dell inkjet and toner cartridges from the following:

Computer Retail Stores. Computer retail stores would carry accessories such as ink and toner cartridges for the printer unit models that they have on display. Your best option, then, is to head to the computer retail store where you have purchased your Dell inkjet and toner printer to purchase your ink or toner cartridges.

The Internet. There are a number of online computer websites that offer a wide variety of inkjet and toner cartridges at a relatively lower cost as compared to the prices offer in computer retail stores.

Catalogues. Office supply stores and computer stores would often provide customers with a catalogue which they can use to order Dell ink and toner cartridges.

The official website of Dell allows you to purchase genuine ink and toner cartridges in retail and bulk orders. The orders are sent within 3 – 5 business days at no extra cost within the US Mainland.

Cheaper Alternatives to Original Printer Cartridges

Refilling ink and toner cartridges. Original ink and toner cartridges can be refilled through the user of refill kits available in office supplies stores and computer retail stores. The downside of this is that these original cartridges are equipped with the same smart chip used by Epson and Canon.

Generic printer cartridges. Various generic printer cartridge manufacturers offer ink and toner cartridges these are compatible with Dell printers. These cartridges cost almost half the price of original printer cartridges.

Finding Dell Printer Drivers

You can find all the printer drivers for all Dell inkjet and laser printers at Dell’s official website regardless on how old your Dell inkjet or laser printer model may be. On top of this, it offers other information that would be helpful when you install your Dell printer such as:

Dell printer model compatibility with Windows Vista

Troubleshooting Support Page

Real-time Live Customer Service

Warranty Information

True Essence of Best Printing Solution From Primera

When daily common talks revolve around the subject of best printing products, it is almost difficult to over look dominance of Primera Products across the present day techno savvy world. Unfortunately, it can also present problems when you are attempting to integrate your old hardware devices. It is common to encounter a situation where a printer that performed seamlessly on XP doesn’t work at all on Vista. This could be for a number of reasons, but more than likely, it is something simple. Before cashing out on new hardware, you should first look for an updated driver to see if that solves the problem.

Start with Microsoft’s Website

The first place you want to search for updated printer drivers compatible with Vista is the Microsoft website. Microsoft tends to keep its website updated with the latest patches and drivers for the most commonly used applications and drivers. If you don’t have any luck here, head over to the site of the company who manufactured your printer. This could be either the Epson or HP website. Even if there isn’t a device driver update section, you should be able to find the same information in the support area of the website. After finding the appropriate driver, download it to your computer.

How to Install the Updated Device Driver

Close down any applications you have open and install the driver. There is typically a wizard that will guide you through each step that is required. In most cases, you will need to reboot the system before the changes go into effect.

After restarting your computer, fire up the printer and see if it is working properly. If there is a problem, open the Control Panel and click “Printers” to find out if Vista recognizes it as the default printer. This is important, as the printer will not function if it is not designated as the default device. If it isn’t, simply right-click the printer, select “Set as Default” and give the printer another try.

If the printer still isn’t working properly, you might have to make a few minor adjustments. This calls for you to go back to the Control Panel and select “Printers.” Right-click the printer, and this time, select “Properties.”

Next, choose the “Advanced” tab and go to the section that displays the driver. If you don’t see the driver you downloaded, use the drop-down menu and see if it is listed there. If it isn’t, click on “New Driver” and try to install the driver again. This should direct you to the “Add New Printer Driver Wizard.” Select your printer manufacturer from the provided list to see if the driver shows up in the subsequent pane. If it does, select the listed driver to see if solves your problems. If it doesn’t show up, choose the “Have Disk” option along with the location where you previously downloaded the updated driver. Follow the instructions and restart your computer before testing the printer again.

Tip: Although you may not be prompted to do so, always reboot your computer after installing updated drivers. Although there are a number of choices on the market, you’ll find that a few possess features which are going to give them an advantage and which would be an excellent choice for your specific needs. Below are some details of those different printers.

HP Z3100

This Hewlett Packard model is one of the most popular printers. For one, the printer is fairly easy to use. It comes with a great deal of documentation to make problem solving a cinch. Additionally, the HP is extremely fast at handling print jobs. In fact, the HP’s speed is about double that of the Epson’s (see below). However, when it comes to color, the HP can provide some great color but there are some weaknesses in the palette. Orange colors aren’t quite as vibrant, for example, while the yellows look amazing.

Epson Stylus Pro 9800

While the Epson does have a good deal of documentation to help users get a feel for the equipment, it doesn’t come close to the amount found with the HP. As mentioned above, the Epson is also about half as fast as the HP model. When it comes to the color delivery though, Epson printer is about equal to that of HP’s. The difference is in which colors are the most vibrant. For instance, the Epson model seems to have much more realistic green colors.

Xerox 8264E

While Xerox is a more common name for copiers, the company does a great job of producing wide-format color printers that can deliver exceptional results. Not only does the Xerox model do its magic quickly but the equipment has been specifically designed to be eco-friendly and to minimize ink usage. That means you’ll actually save money while also helping to save the planet. You won’t find that type of benefit if you choose the HP or Epson printers.

Canon ImageProGraf IPF5100

Finally, you can’t discuss amazing graphic printing without mentioning at least one Canon product. In fact, Canon produces several wide-format printers for a variety of needs. One of the nicest part of the printer is that it uses a 12 color system which can provide a wide range of brilliant shades and hues in the printed documents. The printer comes with automatic recalibration to make sure you get the best results every time you do a print job. This Canon model also works well with some of the top photo-related software, such as PhotoShop, which could be extremely useful for print shops.

Top Epson Printers of All Times and Why People Love Them

The memories that you share with your family and friends are very important.
